Sharkfan
Both my 540i/6 and my B10 4.6 came with wood surrounds and I didn't like either. I laid a piece of black suede over the first one and also replaced the wood gearknob for the OEM leather 6 speed type, and for the Alpina I bought an M5 surround and had it dyed the right shade of blue... They were both daily drivers so I always had 'stuff' there and didn't want it skittering about scratching the wood.

Those grey pieces either end should have disintegrated years ago. I took them from a donor car I bought as mine where cheese too, that was a one owner 110k saloon car (but with rust issues) that I got for the M50b25tu that I wanted to replace my smooth but underpowered b20tu. Honestly, the money I have spent on this thing…
Sharkfan
There are still a few E34 enthusiasts about who have emptied their wallets into their cars upkeep. Fortunately my fixit today was easy as I had a tested spare - heater valves on my E34. I will take the seizes/unresponsive one apart and see if I can free it off. i also had the E38 apart to replace the windscreen washer pump…

I was sold the gearknob by a young kid at BMW Cotswolds but when it arrived it was not burr walnut as promised but myrtle - which is darker and redder. Gone with it after a small refund but not ideal, however it looks ok generally. You can see the colour difference in the sun more as the pictures show. My old walnut gearknob and surround will be on eBay soon… You know you can retrofit the OBC don't you? wiring is usually there...
Sharkfan
Today I took out all the boot panels of my E34 Touring so that I can get to the strut tops to change the rear struts tomorrow.
Flandy
I did that a few years back, it was kind of annoying, but it did give the opportunity to recover the headlining, which was also an annoying job!
Sharkfan
Rear struts replaced with new Bilstein B8's and new OEM everything else. Fixed a few bits of trim and and replaced a few fastners and then took the car for a short but enthusiastic shakedown - lovely - what a noise. Got a thumbs up from an M3 Touring owner and an RS6 Avant owner while I was out.

Nick540Touring
Recently had my '94 540i touring brake reaction arms replaced (as RHS front wheel was juddering really horribly under braking). Had all the water pipes replaced as fed up with topping up water after every approx. 100miles, and the water pump, and having a couple of split hoses (and a very grumpy wife, at the side of the M4 one time). Halfway through main boot struts (struggled to find suitable replacements, and knackered the fittings when I fitted the wrong ones (thread too narrow!)) Mechanics at BMR (who do the big mechanical jobs) reckons I might need to start looking for a new auto box.... Ouch. Only about 55 more jobs on the list... yes, seriously. Mainly minor inconveniences, like fuel gauge, boot wiring etc... Still reasonably rust free, but will need some TLC in that area.
