What did you do to your E39 today?

Both the crank, and the camshaft sensors are fiddly, simply because the leads connect under the inlet manifold, you can see the connection, but once your hand is under the manifold to make the connection you are working blind, so that part is not particularly easy.

AAAARRGGH.

Just when I was about to post about how good a well-sorted E39 still is, the feckin' thing has decided to play up.

Basically engine rev surges whilst the gearbox doesn't engage, then a thump when it does. It doesn't do it when cold but has developed it over a couple of long runs recently.

I'm thinking a full or partial rebuild as it is on 178k miles after a gearbox service just over 30k miles ago.

The three places I am considering are;

Stephens Engineering in Ware as they have Alpina gearbox rebuild experience, or

CCM in Ewhurst, or BTEAutomotive in Bordon, as ZF UK lists them as approved ZF Pro Tech specialists with full access to ZF help for parts and knowledge.

I'd consider another service & transgo pressure regulator valve. Worth a try considering the cost of a full rebuild. I have done the valve on some 5HP19s and all have made a massive difference in how quickly and smoothly D and R are engaged. I know yours is the 5HP24 but you should get similar results.

You'll probably have to order the regulator valve in from the US though

Well after a slight delay the car is back and super smooth again. Only time and miles will tell me if the fix is a cure but at a fraction of the price of rebuild it was well worth taking a chance.

Now its back I firstly swapped on the 19" Alpina's as it had been on the winter tyred M-Paras. I had cleaned and polished the Alpina's while they were off the car so the Para's will go back under a cover. Checked the tyre pressures, reapplied some anti-rattle pads to the underside of the wheel centre covers and it all looks great again.

Next was sort out the PDC - the dreaded beep and flashing light let me know something was up at the rear. In the end it was slightly dodgy connections at the control unit and a loose connection at the left rear sensor. Took a while to figure out through two faults but got there in the end. Put back together, tested and error checked and it all works...

...until the next loose connection.

Onto a quick vacuum of the footwells and a replacement of the flap of the load area 12v socket - some careless chucking of 'stuff' as you can do with a Touring had caught it and snapped it - after scratching my head to figure out how it came apart, it came apart and the new flap/cover is on.

It needs a wash but the wifes F33 needed one more so it got dibs - the E39 is back on daily driver duties and the E34 can once again hide away in a cosy garage.

The E34 has developed an AAC issue which requires the centre console coming out and I also want to attempt a fix on the Alpina speedo to correct the reading - it came off a B10 BiTurbo and does work but is reading wrong. It has sat in a box for at least 10 years but a man in States has BTDT and sent me his notes. I need to take one resistor off the back of the speedo and loop in some long wires to a remote 0-100ohm fine calibration resistor and then do some testing against a sat nav reading. Then solder in some equivalent resistors to the exact value that the test resistor is.

All, hopefully 😀

Glad to hear the good news on the gearbox! I reckon it should be good for a long time to come 😁

The B10 finally has its freshly refurbished wheels back on! It should be back on the road with in only a couple weeks 😁

With exception to the shocks, it's had every suspension component replaced, all the brakes, lines and hoses replaced and just a general freshen up.

E39 B10's seem thin on the ground in whatever engine flavour. Compared to the earlier E34 and later E60/61 Alpina's the E39's sold in huge numbers, even in the UK, so there was always the impression there was plenty of them, but the reality was they were still a rare sight, and rarer still now. Post some pics of the car up when you get a chance.

So after nearly 12 months off the road, the B10 passed its MOT, advisory free today. A quick wash, new road tax and off we go 😁 Well, after the wheel alignment on Monday anyway. Enjoy the weather everyone 😎20240509_101006.thumb.jpg.400d2d1e870ce9a97f76691c8bfc4f14.jpg20240509_105846.thumb.jpg.54ba40234a6f900d383c1490fe46a2c2.jpg

My time back on the road was short lived as I decided to send some bits away to be painted.

2-3 week turn around and it will be back on the road... 12 weeks later, I've now got all the panels back and it's back on the road once again 🎉

Freshly painted and repaired front bumper, back to bare metal bootlid repaint and spoiler repainted. Rewire on the spoiler brake lights and a quick oil change. Time to get some miles on before the salt comes!!

(Alpina badging will be put back on the bootlid but after 11 weeks they still haven't arrived from Germany 🤷‍♂️)
