X2 🙂 Another Achilles heel… you don’t notice this whilst in motion but it started as occasional very faint wisps of smoke from the drivers side of the bonnet when stationary and escalated to smoke and burnt oil smell coming through the vents. FYI it wasn’t using any oil, so it doesn’t take much. Some half witted previous owner/mechanic had already had a go with silicone sealant. I side stepped this job as it needs injectors out. Andrew Posted August 21, 2023 Author Share Posted August 21, 2023 Ordered up my diff oil, engine oil, air filter and a gasket for the inlet manifold should I need it if I ever get a chance to do the other gaskets...... Jeezo if it's not raining here, it's raining heavily. Got everything else I need for the service in the next month or so. Luckily the rainbow pattern in puddles on my drive around my car alerted me to that last year, so those gaskets were replaced. After last week's rocker cover gasket replacement hopefully I'm OK on the oil leak front for a while...? Mine is but it requires the subframe to be dropped and it can be managed by cleaning it off at each service. It wasn't difficult Wheel bearing replacement arranged for this week. That one has lasted for 165000 miles so not too bad I guess. Mine has a sweat from the intercooler o rings and from the o ring on the turbo to block oil return pipe. I won't be doing the wheel bearing. I have entrusted the task to friendly mechanic who does things properly for mates rates. He'll pick the car up from my work, take it to his place 5 mins away, fix it and bring it back before I finish. It wasn't Crossflags in Dumfries you fell out with? I test drove an absolutely mint E39 528i SE back in 2002/3. But ended up buying a house with the money instead. No it was an indie garage, not technically a specialist but he seemed to know a lot about BMWs and always had at least one in being worked on. Turned out he was fitting pattern parts while claiming to fit genuine I've had a few bottles of screenwash and an undertray from the parts dept at Crossflags.(Arnold Clarks) but that's as close as my car has got to their workshop. Percha Posted August 28, 2023 Share Posted August 28, 2023 (edited) I changed my oil and oil filter/cabin filter and air filter, and repaired the outer sheath on some wiring underneath my engine cover whilst I was in there. I have seen this damage in two other places on my engine before now (and in fact BMW told me about it on a health check when they changed the fuel filter earlier in the year) so I am not sure if this is new or not! I should point out this is rodent damage, wires are all still in tact just outer sheathing it seems they like 😞 Also recieved my new rear discs/pads and wear sensor, a job for another day! Andrew Posted August 30, 2023 Author Share Posted August 30, 2023 Read its fault codes! TWENTY FAULT CODES in DME!!! However, it was entirely of my doing, so that’s o.k. I had a spare 30 mins for tinkering so decided to test my theory out that.... ....by disconnecting this lead from the battery fuse box I would kill the power to the engine fuse box and thus the DME. Which stops many things from working including the fuel injectors, which is what I’m after, but fundamentally allows the engine to crank and thus turn over the oil pump and primes the engine after any work on the main oil system, including the oil cooler gaskets which are top of my to do list. Engine spun over easily but did not start. You don’t want the injectors firing as that would wash the bores of oil. But because literally every engine mounted sensor is electrically dead (vanos, turbo actuators, Valvetronic, injectors, coils, you name it, it was logged), it logs many fault codes. Thankfully they all cleared and all was well after a drive when I rechecked them. What a transformation in handling...gone is the wafty ride and the rear of the car being unsettled by any minor pimple in the road, which had got noticebly worse in the last 3 months. The car feels so much more composed over uneven road surfaces. In terms of the old dampers, one had zero resistence left in it, the other a little. So might look to refresh things as funds allow….. Just over £500. I would have had a go myself as I DIYd the springs and dampers on my old E90 335i a few years back. But having read @Andrew's write up of the job confirming that it's tricky to do properly without a lift as you need to get a lot of torque into the bottom bolt (I think) and get the alignment of the top mounts right, I decided to let an expert do it properly. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
