No Diesel for the new 5 series!

Read an article yesterday about the release of the new 5 series. 2.0 petrol MHT, plug in hybrid and electric only. No Diesel planned. Is this the end of a long range tourer? No more 700 miles from a tank. only 300 miles from the electric(in ideal world test conditions, probably real world 200 miles)

Such a ridiculous decision by BMW. Especially when it would seem most of the rest of Europe have the 520d and a new 3.0 diesel on the way next year. Even looking on Auto Trader, and searching from 2020 onwards, there are still more diesels than anything else. I mean £50k for a 520i, it's just madness.

The list price for my Feb 2020 520D MHT Tourer was actually £47k

I bought it as a pre reg with 18 miles on the clock for £30k though!

Pretty sure people see cars in the same way as a washing machine etc these days.

Very much treated as a commodity due to the ease of getting a 50K car on PCP. It would be interesting to know how many cars people actually buy, rather than rent these days.

I know many people who just look at the monthly cost. Car is a means to an end.

I wish I didn’t care. I spent £20 on a fuel flap last week as I hated the crease visible in certain light mine had.

BMW aren't prestige cars anymore, just run of the mill mass produced with massive discounts to match. The RRP means nothing. Ditto Mercs, Audis etc.

Prestige cars, no,  that day has long since passed, I would still say they are a league or two above mainstream manufacturers such as Ford, Vauxhall, Skoda. Same with the Mercedes, and Audi.

I had an Audi Q5 loan car for a month after someone turn right in front of me in my work Discovery. I found the Audi sooooo disappointing, it felt very cheap inside, the ride quality was not nice compared to my G31 and the technology was crap.

In my opinion my 5 Series and my wife's 1 series are far superior. Even after driving my work Discovery HSE  which was a £60k+ car it does not match the quality and drive of my G31.

Tell you what Andy - they still have a much nicer feel about them than some cars. I traded in my F10 520d for a Volvo S90 a few months back - and I just could not get on with it. It was well equipped, but missing some stupid things like front parking sensors. No buttons, everything on menus - so many things you would need to divert your concentration from the road. Seats were impossible to get comfortable in - odd on a Volvo - and when the sun came out it reflected off all the shiny surfaces - of which there are many - and blinded me.

It lasted 5 weeks, and was returned from whence it came. Happily the dealer hadn’t sold my 520d, which is back in my drive. I don’t know what I was thinking.

Have to say I think the days of cheap cars on PCP are almost at an end. There are nowhere near the offers available now that there once were. I'm sorry but £50k for a 520i is just crazy.

BMW have even pulled the Armed forces/Emergency services department out of Park Lane BMW. in 2020 this team would save 12% on a 5 series. I'm guessing BMW have said "you want Brexit you've got Brexit"

No. That's because of the issues of particular engines blowing up on Police cars which caused fatal accidents the contract ended - not Brexit.

That's a different thing all together with the police cars and engines.

Park Lane BMW ran the BMW discount scheme for members of the armed forces to buy their own personal car. The scheme also covered the 999 services for buying their own car.

I'd still bet it's related. No doubt their deal was probably pretty lucrative, and the 12% discount is probably no bigger than you could get in a normal dealer - so no loss for them.

Plenty of goodwill/discount offers from dealers from RRP to the actual cost of buying a vehicle.

The EU has recently introduced a ban on diesel cars and the only new ones that you can buy are those which are in stock. I wanted a new automatic KIA Sportage and was told that the only option was petrol. I spoke to my local Hyundai dealer who could source a couple of auto diesel Tucsons which is pretty much the same car but in the end we could not put an acceptable deal together.
