Well, the bible does not ship to Malta 😡 .. they used to before!

Probably doing you a favour too!

On mine the red bush/hanger is in the centre section close to the DPF, all others are also black. I have 3 of these in total, all used and all are (subjectively) different stiffness when compressed by hand. I picked the firmest of the three to fit the last time, but IDK if it made any difference as my rattle was due to an engine to Cat bracket not being fitted when I bought an aftermarket Cat and fitted it.

Two additional observations are mine)(520D) is a rectangle shaped, and when fitted it is deformed quite allot by the exhaust, not in compression but longtitudally due to the exhaust fitment being offset by 10cm or there abouts. Looks like a Parrallelogram Trapezoid when all torqued down.

Surprising given all parts are OEM BMW in the exhaust system now.

I also agree with Gonzo that Febi is close to OE BMW aftermarket parts. In fact I got IWIS to confirm in writing that they supply BMW OE and Febi with the same chain kit I need for my engine.

Yesterday saw a couple of hours purging the DSC valve block for a second time. With the 535d relocating it as far as possible from the master you run into issues getting air out the main feed pipe due to the diameter, you can minimise issues by clamping the pedal down and due to me only swapping the DSC valve block this time I had hoped it wouldn't be such a PITA this time.

Anyway, after running the special cases bleed routine last week followed by a standard purge I thought I was onto a winner but the pedal was still softer than before.

A quick check yesterday by cracking the FL caliper while running the standard bleed saw air come out.

So off I go with several litres of fluid and a combined 48 pumps of the pedal plus a few extra before and after. I expect closer to 80 pumps yesterday and 3 litres of fluid.

Pedal is hard AF again now but I'll still do a standard purge in a few months to see if there were any microscopic bubbles that have clumped into visible ones.

Was it worth it, well I was heading down the local bypass doing 50 (speed limits 50) then never got so excited to be stuck in traffic, dodgy cameraman, I blame the fact he is 9 and no, it was my choice of music...

Car slowed down, my feet are not on the pedals, cruise still active and set to 50.

.

So the car is driving itself now in traffic. That's pretty cool. Have you tested how it behaves at 70+ following on M-way and reactions to traffic?

Next you will be retrofitting a Tesla centre console Screen and Autonomous driving module/ecu with Alexa voice commands activation via an IoT interface module 😜😁 Probably would end up witt a better end product than an OE Tesla too 😂

Thanks guys.  Today i spent some time in traffic and although the rattle is gone, the idle sound still does not sound well.  I dont know how to explain it, but it still sounds a bit deep sort off inside the cabin...and noiser that when the car is 1000rpm and above...i dont think it should be the case.  So most probably i will remove the central tie wraps and try something at the back mountings...

Sometimes i feel the e61 is not well insulated either...you can hear the engine and the surroundings more than you hear in an E class of the same age for example.  I dont know if it is just me...i had a 190D with 2.5 diesel engine from 1991 and it was much quieter inside...really....

Don't compare the W123/W124 generation Mercs with anything else, they were vastly over engineered, with a 10+ year devilment cycle. In the 2000's they moved towards new models almost every year, not the same cars today and certainly not the same quality or durability by design.

If manufacturers used today's materials and production technogies with a remit and timescales to build some of those 90's cars again, they will be vastly superior than anything else on the road.

And I'm not even a Merc fan, but the engineering that went into those cars can't be denied.

exactly 100% correct mate.

what an era of cars 😍

stainless steel/steel cable ties do exist for using on hot parts.

I have some on the exhaust shields on my Motorbike, which are in direct contact with it - they're still on there and tight well over a year on.

Yeah those are designed for heat. I've used the same to wrap two exhaust Manifolds with heat wrap. They work well and last. A bit of a PITA if you don't have the tool to lock them and wrap. The excess into a roll, but even with a hammer and a cutter and a bit of effort they can be made to fit the crude way lol

I'd like to calibrate the sensor before I let it loose on the motorway 🙂

Wise decision. Probably won't hurt to ask a friend to come out to do the initial testing with as well. Knowing when someone will do a predetermined pretend emergency braking manoeuvre but not actually stop would be useful to know for sure the behaviour.

I'm sure BMW have done plenty of testing there, but you have fiffles with it so best to do some sanity checking before you trust it 100% and go making cups of tea in the back of the car with the Mrs while letting your 9 year old steer the ship. 😉

Yeah…that is what i was going to say my man…it would have been cheaper to teach your son how to drive…and he will be driving you around…way much more fun 😂

It doesn't do an emergency stop, the car symbol turns red and the dash beeps at you to say "I'm out, over to you" 💩

Well that's a bit shit. What's its purpose then, just to help you crawl in traffic but when it really matter.... "You're on your own son" 👀👀👀💩💩💩

It will stop but in an emergency you have to take over, it does prime the brakes when that happens so you proper stab on.

Main use is motorway, but there's no watching a porno like you can in a Tesla lol

It would seem Bosch has done a limited run of servotronic racks, no doubt at the request of BMW as all production had ceased when I looked 2 years ago.

Anyway, I and another lad have just thrown £1200 to APD to see if they come good on the part.

And then found a £400 lower steering column shaft and got it for £180.

If my wife asks, I won them...

Won them where, at the Bingo? 🤣

Bloody hell mate, your wife might think you have a bit on the side...... 🤔 Ohh but it transpires that you do 🤣🤣🤣

Is it really worth the hassle and expense especially given their reputation for not lasting long?

Your steering budget will cover my engine's Reliabiility for the next 100K miles. 😁

That looks quite the setup.

Success?

For a first attempt, yeah, over 300 miles yesterday, didn't throw a fault. I'd like to do it again on proper flat ground though

A friendly garage perhaps. If they have a 4 poster used for tracking that should give you a guaranteed flat surface but setting up could be a challenge if space ahead of the ramp is limited.

Jig is my daughters bed that I ripped apart, 2 bars bolt to the subframe to line up the mirror, then spirit level it, so I may go ask my MOT guy if I can borrow the outside ramp

Koni spacial actives install all round today on my touring and sachs oem springs on front. That car definitely drives different now.  Very pleased with results. Thanks to all people who suggested them, they are worth it

Factory M sport, and it stayed the same height. Springs were the same part number as from factory so should be the same.  Maybe front end is few mm higher at front due to springs not settled down, but nothing too noticeable so might be wrong on this.  I'll see on Friday what it looks like after a week. At least even missus noticed difference driving today and said car fees more stabile on turns.

If you did top mounts at the same time, it can take a couple of months to get back to the right height. Springs, a few weeks.
