N47 Smoking again - oil breather hose

Recommended Posts

Slight smell of smoke in the cabin and small waft of smoke from drivers side of the bonnet. Oil is leaking onto the exhaust…

Been here before with inlet manifold gasket.

However the cars just been into the stealer last month for the EGR recall

Looks like the frail breather hose from the intake has finally given up/smashed during EGR replacement.

Oil dripping from the hose at the front of the engine and works it’s way back at speed onto the hot exhaust

Hopefully it’s a low cost cure…

Well after postal delays and bad weather the breather hose aka washing machine hose was finally replaced today

10 minute job

Bizarre that the mating O ring was more expensive than the pipe…

The O ring was not sealing and the old pipe literally fell to pieces upon removal. I guess continual hot/cold cycling doesn’t sit well with cheap plastics.

fingers crossed that’s the end of the smoke!

*** BUMP ***

Still getting slight Smokey smells in the cabin when stationary or slow moving traffic. Fine whilst moving.

This is despite replacing the rocker cover gasket, oil breather hose & its O ring, plus the oil filler O ring - not even a year ago. Granted I do some mileage, but it’s disappointing when genuine parts don’t fit right…

Seems that oil is getting passed the O ring under the (new) breather hose. Give the top of the hose a nudge and you can see oil seeping out, and the oily mess on the OSF of the engine. At least it’s not dripping on the exhaust, but enough that you can smell it.

New O ring ordered, let’s see if that’s enough to cure it.

Not being familiar with that engine but is the flexi hose that’s broken again linking between two parts that move differently in relation to each other?

If one end is on the engine and the other end fixed to something on the chassis, it might be a sign that your engine is moving too much as in worn out engine mounts.

It might be a symptom of another fault.
